Clarence James Wallis commenced boiler and pressure vessel inspection in 1953 following extensive marine engineering experience. After working in the insurance industry, his own practice was established in 1961. At that time inspectors were licensed under the Factories, Shops & Industries Act.

Nowadays AAI performs inspection to meet the requirements of Occupational Health & Safety legislation in Australian and Overseas Jurisdictions.

AAI representatives sit on committees involved in development of standards and professional codes of practice.
